Superkarts at French Grand Prix

In what might be the final year of the French Grand Prix taking place at the Magny-Cours track out in the middle of nowhere on the weekend of the 1 July, the organizers today announced that the weekend program will have not only Formula 1, GP2, Porsche Supercup and the F3 Euroseries. It will also have go-kart races!

With my love of karting, I am in fact, greatly looking forward to seeing these particular machines on the F1 track. Because superkarts are the fastest karts around. These are not just your average weekend rental machines, or even your average karting world championship level 100 or 125 cc machines. These are Superkarts:

  • Engine: Twin-cylinder two-stroke liquid-cooled 250 ccs
  • Power output: Around 95 bhp
  • Maximum revs: 14,000 rpm
  • Weight of driver/kart: 474 pounds
  • Maximum speed: 155 mph
  • Fared-in tubular chassis
  • Disc brakes front and rear
  • Rack and pinion steering
  • 6-inch tires

And, lest you begin to worry, the drivers are over 18 years of age, and so presumably they are old enough to know they are crazy.
