Reactions To Loss Of Canadian Grand Prix

Friday October 10, 2008

With the release of its latest provisional 2009 Formula One race schedule, the International Automobile Federation this week announced that there would be no Canadian Grand Prix next year. The reaction has been fast within and outside the world of Formula One. Teams are complaining, fans are complaining, the Canadian government is complaining - all are working to try to save the race. The latest move is an online petition to save the Canadian Grand Prix.

I agree with the FIA and FOM. Technicaly, the track in Montreal is not up to standard and every assurance in the past to bring it up to a modern specification has been half-baked and disengenuious. They only have themselves to blame and now like typical Canadians they whine that they are the victims. Who needs that??

I can’t believe that the F1 car manufacturing teams would allow F1 management to remove this race. The tracks great fun, the atmosphere is great, and the stands are packed with willing fans/consumers. All tracks need improvement so that excuse is pretty poor.

I would suspect Les Speed has never seen an F1 race live and has never been to Canada.

I can tell from his name les speed he must be a tree hugger or something. F1 is about going faster. as for the race being axed it is all about $$$ Bernie better be careful in these economic times. i heard he now wants to have spec engines for the cars. this is F1 not formula BMW. if Singapore can be put up in a weeke this track can be updated easily

Removing the Canadian GP is the last straw. Now we have no North American GP. No way is the road course in Monaco, or Singapore better than the Canadian GP course. Even Fuji is in worse shape than Montreal. Bernie is now talking about spec engines, and “company chassis”. Where did the innovation go? F-1 is supposed to be the ultimate in racing not open wheel NASCAR. And besides, Bernie and Mosley like Ferarri better.

Happy Thanksgiving! you have all proved my point. Not only do I live in Canada, I’ve attended races in Canada, Europe and Asia. More Speed must be a robot who doesn’t need oxygen to breathe just slanted media opinion to fuel his id. Also, there is a difference between spec and homologated engines, read a dictionary before reacting. Finally, can’t speak for Bernie or Max, yet I sure do like my own Ferrari a lot better than anything else.

This track quite is boring. There are only two places for over-taking moves (before the hairpin and the end of the straight afterward), not to mention repetitive. This doesn’t mean that I’d like to see the Canadian GP left off the calendar, but I wouldn’t miss it. I would rather see Singapore left off before Canada, however (too narrow and bumpy). F1 belongs on real circuits (Spa, China, Silverstone, Old Hockenheim, Brazil). I’d throw Monaco in the “do without” mix, but that’ll never happen in reality. Monaco is procession at its finest (discounting the safety car sessions and pit strategies)!

(7) Denizen Kate says:

Simmer down, lads. This isn’t a shoot-out.

To those who think the Montreal track is boring, I must ask, how long have you been watching F1? Look back at just the last couple of seasons. Montreal is ALWAYS an exciting race! Plus, with the scrapping of the U.S. race, Montreal is the only F1 event North American fans can attend without going overseas, which has become a real hassle since 9/11.

How about a night race on the streets of Las Vegas?

(8) Les Speed says:

… or, a night race in Vancouver 2010 to replace Montreal.

(9) Les Speed says:

I stand corrected on the engines, unless it’s a politico move to introduce homologation, because it’s hard to imagine Ferrari agreeing to that….

(10) formula1 says:

Unless Ferrari wins the contract to supply the engines – no? !

October 22, 2008 at 12:16 pm
(11) Les Speed says:

With the engine situation semi-clarified, yet IMHO the Ferrari does sound the best, now for some more embarrassing news about the Quebec taxpayers government officials jetting to London on a mission to save the Canadian GP…such is the pathos in la belle province.

…..looks like it just got too expensive and tiresome to clean up all the cheese curds after the race………also they couldnt keep Celine Dion off the track, she kept running out there with her huge nose and horsey hair and her golfcart….
here’s what……CANADA GET YOUR OWN SPORT, DONT MOOCH OFF THE EUROPEANS!!!!!!
