A U.S. Grand Prix In New York City?
I don't often report secondhand paddock rumors. But this one is just too juicy to ignore, especially given the situation with the loss of the Canadian Grand Prix and the alienation this is causing amongst fans AND F1 teams alike. But someone has just whispered to me here in the paddock in at the Fuji Speedway in Japan that they heard from a team source that Bernie Ecclestone is in advanced negotiations toward holding a street race in New York City.
Of course I've heard of Bernie dreaming about New York before, but he apparently now even has an idea of where exactly this would take place. (The Village? East Third street, Avenue A and B and...who knows? Broadway? It's wide enough, isn't it?)
Indeed, Bernie is bringing more races to cities. But if he wants to make this one a night race, then I suppose European fans will have to stay up until 3:30 AM to watch the end of it.... :)
Of course, at a time when Bernie is being criticized by one and all by the loss of a race in North American, this could just be a time buying device, couldn't it?

believe me i live in NY and although 1million of us would love it the other 15 million people who never heard of F1 and are too busy to care would be like “whatever” or “why are these roads closed?” it would be lacking F1 excitement.
i hope this is true! it’d be so exciting
Never gonna happen. Even if they remove all the parked cars, streets like Avenue A or 6th St (where I lived for nearly 10 years) are not wide enough to make a decent street course.
IMHO, the rumors about a night race in the U.S. may be true, but think Las Vegas, not New York.
Hey… I get up at 4am most Sundays to watch F1… Sorry Euors, I don’t feel for you if you have to wake early. Good start to the morning, though
It’s not going to happen. The city doesn’t have the money for it, and let’s face it – the promoter will want to make money. Didn’t Bernie make the outrageous statement that the desire to make profit is the problem with promoters in the West? Until Bernie and Max are gone, you won’t see F1 in North America.
North America seems like it’s just NASCAR… Some people never seem to have heard of F1 (like they lived under a rock for some years or just don’t care…) Singapore happened, but they have such nice streets… I can only imagine how with the recession… that the CITY would actually want to be bothered with F1 at all. It would really be something though to see it but it seems so soo sooooooo far from ever happening. GOODLUCK WITH THAT!
