Has Alonso Already Chosen Team For 2009?

Sunday October 12, 2008

After Fernando Alonso took his second victory in a row today at the Japanese Grand Prix driving for the Renault team, there are a lot of people asking him if the results have influenced his decision on what team he will join next year. At the last race, Alonso said that it had not, but that his priority had always been to stay with Renault if things moved in the right direction.

He was asked again today after winning in Japan, and this time he gave a more unusual answer: "I said that I will make a decision after Brazil. It doesn’t mean that I don’t know what to do. I know what to do, but after Brazil I will announce."

To me that sounds as if he has already made his decision. But what could it be? Honda is still waiting for him to decide, apparently, and while Honda's results this year do not improve, he wins two races in a row at Renault. Honda has Ross Brawn, the great engineer, however, and a complete rewrite of the rules next year could mean a Honda revival - as it could mean the same for any team. Not to mention that I have a suspicion Honda could offer Alonso a lot more money than Renault. But what Alonso really wants is a third world title, and at the moment, that theory really does point a little more towards staying at Renault. But why the wait?

Why the wait? Maybe his team of choice for 2009 wants to delay the announcement, or maybe he just wants to indulge in a little drama. Whatever his decision may be, count on it being for 2009 only. Based on his recent comments regarding his plan to help Hamilton’s rivals, I believe Alonso still has a red car in mind for 2010.

I personally think Alonso will move to Ferrari, although he has proved the Renault has what it takes to win a race.

Alonso will never, ever go to Ferrari. Ferrari value loyalty above all else, and Alonso’s actions at McLaren in 2007 prove that he is NOT loyal above all else - he’s tainted goods. Ferrari will not risk having him.

Joe, quite right with your comment, loyalty is special to them. Do you think Ferrari will stay with the two drivers they have for 2009. If they decide to release one of them do you think they could offer Kubica a ride for 2009, or do you think BMW will produce the car Kubica so badly needs?
