It was 17 years ago today that Ayrton Senna died in an accident at the San Marino Grand Prix, at the age of 34. Like today, it was also a 1 May Sunday, a labor day holiday in many countries around the world, including Italy, where he died.
Senna's death, and that of Roland Ratzenberger in qualifying the day before, led to a series of safety measures in Formula 1 that have saved many lives since then. Today, Senna's nephew, Bruno, is a reserve driver at the Lotus Renault team, and he raced at the Hispania team last year. So Senna's memory is still carried throughout the paddock in as strong a way as it can be. Senna won three world titles, and was considered by many as the greatest driver ever in Formula 1.
