McLaren Talk Past and Future

Follow me on:

Some interesting talk from the McLaren Mercedes team on the web sites.  Martin Whitmarsh, the team director, in an interview with Autosport has brought up the interesting point of view of how the team can still win the title this year with nine races remaining, but that it will have to make the most of all the opportunities that present themselves.  He supports this by talking about how the McLaren was a better car than the Ferrari early in the season, but Fernando Alonso made the most of his opportunities in the Ferrari to lead the series, while McLaren did not quite do that...

"In the first 11 races we were on the front row eight times, so the car is not slow in qualifying at least," he said. "But this season has been difficult for everyone - and you would have to say Fernando and Ferrari have done a great job: one in terms of development and two in terms of getting the best out of the package.

"We haven't got the best out of our package."

At the same time, there is a lot of talk on the official Formula1.com web site about the pole positions of the team throughout its history, all inspired by the fact that Lewis Hamilton scored the team's 150th pole position at the Hungarian Grand Prix, the previous race.  Interestingly, though, none of the people in the team spoke of all the amazing pole positions the team scored at the most prestigious race of the series, at the Monaco Grand Prix showcase of a race, where in particular, Ayrton Senna scored the pole in four of the six years he raced in the team....
