The Auto Union cars had the support of the German government, in fact, of Hitler himself. Porsche, Mercedes, Auto Union - they all had a part in creating the car that dominated the competition the way Ferrari did in the early 2000s. Said to be the car that won the 1939 French Grand Prix, and originally meant to be auctioned by Christie's at the Retromobile, it was withdrawn from the sale at the last minute after a question about its exact pedigree.
