Retromobile: A History of Formula 1 Cars

For over 30 years the annual Retromobile car show has presented the world's finest old cars, including many from Grand Prix racing. The 32d annual Retromobile was as spectacular as usual. And for fans of Formula 1 racing, it was a rare vintage - so to speak. This year the show included the centerpiece Auto Union D-Type car that won the French Grand Prix in 1939 and also Gilles Villeneuve's Ferrari Formula 1 car with which he won the Canadian Grand Prix in 1978. The latter belonged to the finest single private collection at the show, that of Nick Mason, the drummer of the Pink Floyd rock band. Mason was on hand to present his collection, and talk about his passion. Stirling Moss, one of the greatest F1 drivers never to win a title, was also present. Local hero, Eric Comas, who raced in F1 before becoming a star in racing in Japan, took part in a presentation at the Michelin tire company's stand. The show was is a short history of Grand Prix racing, as these photos attest.
